Two places explain Mexico better than almost anything else.

Teotihuacan, the great city of ancient Mesoamerica, and the Basilica of Guadalupe, the country’s most important religious site, represent two different worlds that still define Mexican identity today.

This full-day private tour connects both.

We begin at Teotihuacan, walking its main axis, the Avenue of the Dead, and examining the logic behind its layout, its monumental scale, and the ideas that shaped it. You will see the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, and elite residential complexes, while understanding what is known and what remains uncertain about this city.

Later, we return to Mexico City to visit the Basilica of Guadalupe complex, a site that combines 16th-century origins, 18th-century architecture, and modern engineering. We will discuss the 1531 apparitions, their historical interpretation, and the development of the cult over time.

I will also share a personal historical detail: one of my paternal ancestors participated in the 1666 official recognition of the Guadalupe miracle.

The tour includes Tepeyac Hill, its viewpoints, and the most important buildings of the complex.

Detailed Itinerary

This full-day tour (about 8 hours long) begins with a visit to the ancient archaeological city of Teotihuacan, located approximately 50 km (31 miles) northeast of Mexico City, about a one-hour drive from the city.

After exploring Teotihuacan, we return to Mexico City to visit the Guadalupe complex (La Villa de Guadalupe), home to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and continue to Tepeyac Hill, where the tradition of the 1531 apparitions is centered.

I :

Hotel Pickup & Transfer to Teotihuacan

Pickup at your hotel or Mexico City International Airport. Drive of approximately one hour to Teotihuacan.

II Teotihuacan :

Quetzalpapálotl Palace

Visit to an elite residential complex near the Plaza of the Moon, offering insight into high-status life and architectural refinement.

III :

Plaza of the Moon (Plaza de la Luna)

We begin at one of the main ceremonial spaces of the city, understanding its function and layout.

IV :

Pyramid of the Moon

Explanation of its structure and ceremonial role within the complex. Visitors can climb to the first level of the pyramid.

V :

Avenue of the Dead (Calzada de los Muertos)

We walk the central axis of the city while discussing its urban design and orientation.

VI :

Pyramid of the Sun

Analysis of the largest structure in Teotihuacan, including construction and symbolism.

VII :

Temple of the Feathered Serpent (Quetzalcóatl)

Visit to one of the main ceremonial and political centers of the city. Visitors can climb the adjacent platform for a view of the Feathered Serpent Pyramid, where one side is better preserved than those of the other major pyramids.

VIII :

Obsidian Workshop & Lunch Stop

Introduction to obsidian, its historical use, and its importance in Mesoamerica. Pulque tasting (and some other traditional drinks), and time for lunch.

IX Basilica of Guadalupe :

Old Basilica (Expiatory Temple of Christ the King)

We begin at the Old Basilica, where we will observe the structural effects caused by centuries of unstable ground and earthquakes.

Here, I will also share the story of my paternal ancestor and his role in the 1666 investigation that led to the official recognition of the Guadalupe miracle.

X :

Tepeyac Hill (Foothills)

We walk toward the foothills of Tepeyac Hill and explore its historical significance before and after the Spanish arrival.

XI :

Monument to Christ the King

At this point, we will discuss the challenges faced by Catholics in Mexico from the 19th century through the early 20th century, including a major religious conflict.

XII :

Temple of the Hill (Templo del Cerrito)

We reach the Temple of the Hill, a key site in the Guadalupe tradition. From here, there are wide views of the surrounding valley.

XIII :

Tepeyac Garden & “La Ofrenda”

One of the most beautiful gardens of its kind in Mexico City, serving as the setting for a monumental sculptural ensemble known as “La Ofrenda.”

XIV :

Temple of the Little Well (Templo del Pocito)

This baroque temple marks the site of another miracle associated with the Virgin of Guadalupe: the appearance of a miraculous spring of water.

XV :

Ancient Parish of the Indians

A 17th-century temple that preserves early colonial remains inside, offering insight into the first stages of Christian devotion in the area.

XVI :

New Basilica (Image of the Virgin of Guadalupe)

We approach the New Basilica to see the original tilma (cloak) of Saint Juan Diego, preserved for nearly 500 years and associated with the Guadalupe apparition.

In the Basilica of Guadalupe complex, the tour includes climbing approximately 200 steps up and the same number down to reach the top of Tepeyac Hill. The pace is relaxed, but it is important to be aware that Mexico City sits at a high altitude (about 7,330 ft a.s.l. / 2,235 m a.s.l. at Plaza Mariana and 7,430 ft a.s.l. / 2,265 m a.s.l. at the viewpoint). Visitors arriving from lower altitudes may experience mild symptoms such as dizziness, headache, or shortness of breath, especially on their first days. We recommend taking it easy and staying hydrated.
