How difficult is the climb to the top of the Great Pyramid of Cholula?

The climb is moderate and manageable for most visitors. From the base to the top platform, where the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Remedies is located, the elevation gain is approximately 46 meters (151 feet). The ascent covers approximately 280 meters (919 feet) of walking distance, combining steps and a ramp, which makes the climb more gradual and accessible. We always recommend taking it slowly and enjoying the walk rather than rushing to the top.

Will I feel the altitude during the tour?

During the drive from Mexico City to Cholula, we will pass through a higher elevation area between the volcanoes, reaching approximately 3,206 meters (10,518 feet) above sea level. After that, we descend toward Cholula, which is located at around 2,148 meters (7,047 feet) above sea level at the base, and 2,193 meters (7,195 feet) at the top of the pyramid. For reference, Mexico City’s historic center sits at about 2,240 meters (7,349 feet). If this is your first day in Mexico, or if you are coming from a lower altitude, you may feel slightly short of breath or experience a mild headache. This is completely normal. We recommend walking at a relaxed pace, staying hydrated, and avoiding sudden exertion.

This full-day tour (about 9 hours long) begins with a visit to Cholula, located approximately 125 km (77 miles) southeast of Mexico City. We will explore the Great Pyramid, the largest by volume in the world, and ascend to the Sanctuary of Los Remedios for a panoramic view of the volcanic landscape.

Afterward, we continue to Puebla de los Ángeles, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its colonial splendor. We will walk through the Historic Center to visit the Cathedral and the Candy Street, where the city’s 16th-century culinary and architectural heritage is centered.

I :

Departure from Mexico City

We begin the day with pickup at your hotel and head toward the state of Puebla in a comfortable private SUV. Along the way, you will see the changing landscape of central Mexico as we leave the Basin of Mexico behind.

II :

Cholula – The Great Pyramid and the 17th century Spanish Sanctuary

Our first stop is San Andrés Cholula, one of the most historically layered places in Mexico.

Here we explore the impressive Tlachihualtepetl, or “man-made mountain,” the largest pyramid in the world by volume. This site was an important ceremonial center for centuries, successively occupied by cultures such as the Olmec-Xicalanca, Teotihuacans, Toltecs, and Mexica.

We walk up to the top of the pyramid, where the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Remedies was built during the 17th century, in the viceregal period.

From the top, you will enjoy a panoramic view of:

III :

Puebla – The City of Angels

We then continue to Puebla de los Angeles, where we explore its historic center in a continuous walking experience.
